As a child I always wondered how art was actually made and this fascination remains with me to this day. My first favorite tools were pencils, which are still at the top of the list. They have now been joined by papers of every kind, pens, inks, brushes, paints, needles, cloth, all sorts of fibers, found objects, words, cameras, computers and whatever else appeals to me.
Trying new things and getting to play with different materials and tools are among the great joys in my life. It is thrilling to transform raw materials with intention, time and skill into beautiful and useful objects such as pine needles into baskets, bits of fabric into quilts and plant fibers into paper. Being inspired by the materials themselves and by allowing my hands and mind to be free, I become part of all those who have come before and all those who will come after me as the creative process brings into being that which did not exist before.
My paintings are vibrant, using many contrasting colors simultaneously. This technique constantly surprises and delights me. Believing in the power of color and wishing to contribute harmonious and beautiful art to the world, I offer my work for the benefit of all beings.
After receiving a Bachelor of Science in Conservation of Natural Resources from U.C. Berkeley in 1975, followed by a year of graduate study at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor), a job as a college counselor presented itself. During the process of helping others determine their direction, my secret desire to be an artist emerged. I began to study art and continue to explore a wide variety of media and work with many fine artists and teachers.
For years I pursued my art interests while employed as a credentialed teacher, workshop presenter and education program coordinator. In 1995, 1 committed to art completely and have worked in my studio full time ever since, my dream come true.
